President Carter Congratulates Dr. Richard Frieder on People First Award (top left) Congratulations to Dr. Richard Frieder who was selected as the national winner of the VSP “People First Award” at the American Optometric Association Congress held in New Orleans on June 27, 2002.
    President Carter gave the opening address and congratulated Dr. Frieder on the award, which consisted of an engraved plaque and $5,000. Dr. Frieder donated the money back to various charities. The review committee found the details of Dr. Frieder’s nomination to be at the highest level of excellence in demonstrating exceptional commitment to serving patients, their communities and his profession.

Puna, India (top right)
Congratulations to Dr. Frieder receiving an award from the president of the Puna, India Rotary Club. This award was given in appreciation for the clothing, medicine, and school building projects that Dr. Frieder helped develop.

Door of Faith Orphanage (below and left)
With the help of the Mission Viejo Rotary Club and the staff of La Paz Optometric, Drs. Frieder and Sako are able to donate their time once a year to reach out to the children at Door of Faith Orphanage in Baja, Mexico. Every year, in December the staff at La Paz Optometric travel down to the orphanage to give eye examinations to the children and donate eyeglasses to those needing them.

Libano, Columbia (bottom)
Every year, La Paz Optometric Center in conjunction with Dr. Thomas Tooma of TLC Laser Eye Centers auctions off a LASIK procedure at an annual charity/fundraising event in Irvine, CA. The proceeds are then donated to a Father Brian Cooper in Libano, Columbia. The proceeds are then used to fund various projects to help make the lives of the people better. The proceeds help provide lunches for school children, building homes for poor families and have helped in the development of a small coffee factory to provide employment within Libano.
